We’ve done it! We’ve reached the final week in our exploration of “Locavesting: The Revolution in Local Investing and How to Profit from It” by Amy Cortese. (Cortese, 2011) This last and final week rounds up Chapter 13.
Chapter 13 is appropriately titled, “Back to the Future”. In it, the author explores some of the ways that stock exchanges have evolved over the years from local exchanges to massive wide-area exchanges. More recently, there has been a shift back to the original thinking of the local exchanges which seem to have a broader appeal to today’s smaller investors and those who don’t fully trust the broader, computer managed big companies. People are seeking out alternatives to the NYSE and NASDAQ options, looking for a more individual oriented approach.
Everything is cyclical in nature. It starts in one place, evolves around for a while, then comes back to where it began. This appears to hold true for the concept of stock exchanges, as well as investment opportunities. Smaller, more local based systems are becoming more and more appealing to a wider audience. People are looking for that personal touch again. Back to the way it was before large corporations began dominating the market.
Like the evolution of all things, it is up to us to follow our own impressions and find the path that works best for us. As we change, so will our habits. It is important to understand where we came from so that we can face the challenges of the past with the knowledge of the future.
